In 1996, Rev. Dr. Jacob Thoomkuzhy, the then Bishop of Thamarassery, Kerala, India invited the Norbertine Fathers of Averbode to start a pastoral activity in his diocese focussing on rehabilitation of mental patients which was a felt need of the time.
Rev. Abbot Ulric Edward Geniets, the Prelate of Averbode, asked his conferrer Fr. Martin George Parathazha to prepare and coordinate the project in Kozhikode District in Kerala, India. He was asked to establish a charitable society according to the Indian Charitable Society Act, to ensure the long-term stability and continuity of the project.

On 11th October, 1997, the Abbot himself inaugurated the Santhi Charitable Society and laid the foundation stone for Santhi Bhavan. With the consent of his Council, he nominated and appointed Fr. Martin as the Director. To support the works of Santhi Bhavan, the Abbot appointed conferer Bernard Fets as the procurator of the project, on 1st May, 2000.

As a pastoral venture of the Norbertine Community of Averbode, this project is fully coordinated and supported by the abbey of Averbode with the help of its many benefactors in India and abroad.
